Gulf States Are Now Getting the Drone Defense That America Turned Down Last Summer

It is not only American bases in Jordan that are now benefiting from Ukrainian drone defense capabilities. Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian teams have been deployed to Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia as well, helping Gulf partner states build defenses against Iranian aerial attacks. These countries are receiving, today, the kind of support that the United States was offered and declined last August.

Ukraine’s drone defense capabilities are directly applicable to the Gulf threat environment. The Shahed drones that Iran is deploying against American and allied positions are the same weapons Ukraine has been fighting for years in a different theater. The interceptor systems and sensor networks Ukraine developed for its own defense are well-suited to protecting the kind of fixed military installations under attack across the region.

The August White House briefing had specifically anticipated the Gulf deployment scenario. Ukrainian officials recommended establishing drone combat hubs not only in Jordan but in Gulf states as well. The proposal identified the geographic and strategic logic for this regional defense architecture and offered to help build it.

The Trump administration’s failure to pursue the proposal meant that both American and Gulf state forces entered the current conflict without the defensive infrastructure Ukraine had recommended. The cost of that failure has been measured in American casualties, financial expenditure, and operational vulnerability across the region.

Ukraine is now building what it proposed. Teams are active in Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. The regional drone defense network envisioned in the August briefing is being assembled under live conflict conditions. Its value is no longer theoretical — it is being tested against real Iranian drone attacks in real time.
