In a significant move to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into its offerings, Google announced the expansion of its iconic search bar to handle more detailed and conversational queries. This development, revealed at the Google I/O conference, is powered by Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5. The enhanced search will encourage users to interact with Google’s chatbot, offering a more interactive experience that aligns with natural human conversation rather than the traditional search syntax. The change is set to roll out on both desktop and mobile versions of Google Search, promising a more visually enriched and interactive search experience.

Elizabeth Reid, who leads the Google Search product, described these updates as the most significant changes in the nearly 30-year history of Google Search. According to Reid, the updates will transform Google Search into a more AI-centric platform, with longer text predictions and richer visual elements. Users can still opt for the traditional list of links by selecting the “Web” tab. The new search features aim to provide more than just search results, enabling actions such as creating calendar invites or plans within Google’s suite of products.

The introduction of the Gemini model marks a strategic effort to establish a “universal assistant” that is both personal and proactive, according to Josh Woodward, who oversees its development. With 900 million monthly users, the Gemini app is a key component of this strategy, although it still trails behind ChatGPT’s 900 million weekly users. The AI enhancements in Google Search are designed to broaden the appeal of AI tools beyond tech-savvy users, making them accessible to the general public. Subscribers to Google’s AI Pro and Ultra plans will benefit from features like “information agents” and a “generative user interface” that provides customized visuals and interactive elements.

Beyond search, Google is re-entering the smart eyewear market, collaborating with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster to introduce “intelligent eyewear.” These high-tech glasses, slated to launch in the fall, will respond to voice commands and capture photos or videos. This move follows the mixed reception of Google Glass in 2014, which despite its initial hype, was discontinued a year later. However, with companies like Meta also investing in similar technology, the interest in augmented-reality glasses is witnessing a resurgence, positioning them as a potential growth area for Google.
