In a significant diplomatic development, Anutin Charnvirakul and Emmanuel Macron have committed to elevating the bilateral relations between Thailand and France to a strategic partnership. The commitment was made during official discussions held in Paris, where the two leaders concentrated on enhancing cooperation across several key sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology.

The discussions at the Élysée Palace also touched upon regional concerns, particularly the situations in Cambodia and Myanmar. Both nations agreed on increased collaboration in industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for the swift conclusion of negotiations on the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement by the end of the year. Originally initiated in 2013, these free trade talks were paused in 2014 and resumed in 2023, with Thai officials optimistic about the economic opportunities the agreement could unlock.

Emphasizing defense and cybersecurity, Thailand and France have pledged to bolster their joint efforts in combating cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. Thailand affirmed its dedication to peacefully resolving border disputes with Cambodia, adhering to international law frameworks for dialogue.

Looking ahead, both governments have announced the implementation of the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership 2026-2028, which will serve as a roadmap toward a formal strategic partnership. This plan reflects a shared vision for cooperation and growth, underscoring mutual interests and strategic goals.

During his visit, Anutin engaged with executives from major French corporations, including Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, to encourage further investment in Thailand’s high-tech and future industries. French companies showed faith in Thailand’s investment climate, with Airbus confirming its intention to expand aviation and engineering operations in the country, highlighting the robust economic ties and shared aspirations between the two nations.
